מטרות / תוצרי למידה: Students will be able to discuss and write about poetry using the vocabulary of poetic analysis (eg rhyme, rhythm enjambment, end-stopped, alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia, etc.).
Students will be exposed to poems with multiple readings and meanings in order to understand the concept of a "defensible" and "indefensible" reading of a text.

Students will be able to discuss and write about short stories by analyzing plot, characterization, setting, point of view, theme.

Students will be able to write short (3-6 paragraphs) essays about literature which include an introductory paragraph with a clearly defined thesis, a body including a close analysis of a text, and a conclusion.

Students will be able to write a short (5-10 paragraphs) compare-and-contrast essay.

Students will become familiar with elements specific to drama such as props, scenery, costumes, stage directions, etc. as well as characterization, plot, setting, theme, structure.

Students will discuss the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin from a generic, historical, biographical, feminist and literary approach, seeing how different approaches to the work can account for the contradictory emotions that the book has elicited (and still elicits today).

תיאור הקורס: The course is an introduction to the academic analysis of the major literary genres: poetry, short stories, drama, and the novel. In addition to writing academic essays, students will give an oral presentation of a poem or a short story.
